Esera Tuaolo was mentioned in Dallas Voice in their “Super Gay” column. In the article they point out all of the GLBTQ connections to the Super Bowl.
Four known gay players have appeared in Super Bowls.
- Washington tight end Jerry Smith (Super Bowl VII, 1972)
- New York Giants offensive lineman Roy Simmons (Super Bowl XVIII, 1983)
- Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo (Super Bowl XXXIII, 1998)
- New England Patriots offensive lineman Ryan O’Callaghan (Super Bowl XLII, 2007)
The Dallas Voice also points out why we should be excited… “But acceptance of homosexual and bisexual sports stars — even in hyper-masculine football — is becoming more commonplace, and if you need proof, just look at the Super Bowl. Queer people have been scoring big for visibility at the big game for the past few years, a trend that we hope continues at Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, Feb. 13, and well into the future.”
